Island of Ustica
Ustica is a small island, about 9km across, located on the Mediterranean sea, 36 miles north of Palermo. It originated from the eruptive activity of a volcano, in the Neozoic age. The southern part of the island is caracthrized by the presence of many caves created by the erosive action of the sea.
Pre-historic village
In the Faraglioni rocks area, there is a settlement dating back to the Bronze Age, with circular huts placed upon square huts. This village is crossed by a "main street", a unique feature in prehistoric age demonstrating the existence of an urban plan and the recognition of public places.
Spalmatore Tower
Built in 1763 as a lookout and defense tower against pirate raids, was later used as by the Carabinieri force as barracks and for private housing. After a period of abandonment it was restored and entrusted to the Natural Marine Reserve. It is now possible to watch underwater movies or to visit the library of the sea.
Cala S. Maria Tower
Located on Cala Santa Maria, it originally housed the military. It was also used as housing for local authorities and eventually as a prison. After being abandoned, it was restored in 1972 to accommodate the Archaeological Museum, which marked an important moment of cultural promotion.
The church of S. Ferdinando Re
The church was built in 1768. Almost destroyed by a flood, it was restored in 1787 and enlarged in 1800. At present time, there are seven funeral epigraphs placed on the entrance walls that were originally placed on the ground along the aisles.
International Academy of Science and Underwater Techniques
The International Academy was established in 1984; In cooperation with the Provincial Touristic Body of Palermo, it hosts a annual prize, the Gold Trident, to promote scuba diving in the island.
